Red Currant Tomatoes

These super tiny sweet tomatoes are a blast to grown in your garden. Half the size of a penny they grown by the hundreds during the summer on one plant.

They are the smallest tomato we have ever seen, each fruit weighing an average of just three grams and measuring half of an inch in diameter. The round, red fruits are notable for their strong, sweet-tart flavor and firm, juicy texture.

This is the only tomato plant in our garden that isn’t a special heirloom variety. Todd and I were gifted this plant a few years ago by his brother knowing that Todd and I are foodies who are always looking for different foods to cook with.

We have grown this variety ever since and have had great success in growing them from seedlings each year. They grow in little strips, each strip containing the average of 14 extremely tiny tomatoes that start green and slowly with their way to red up the strip during its ripening process. We have grown them both as freestanding plants and in upside hanging tomato planters and both work fabulous depending on the space you have available in your garden. Word of caution, when going out to pick these little gems always check the ground under the plant as sometimes perfectly good ripe ones will fall off onto the ground.

The plants sometimes are slower starters than other typical tomato plants but once they get started as the July summer heat starts you will find the production rate really picks up. The plants average in height of 4 feet tall and not as bushy as other tomato varieties. Picking these off the stem can sometimes be a little more time consuming because not all of them on their vine ripen at the same time. So you may have to dig through the plant to hunt down the ripen ones, but leave the unripe ones on the vine and come back for them in a few days. Once they start to ripe the process happens fast because of their size so keep an eye on the so you will find they are too soft.

With their size being so small there’s no cutting or prep work needed. Who doesn’t love no prep work? Simply rinse and use. This no-prep tomato works perfectly in our Red Currant Tomato & Strawberry Salad Towers

They make a great addition to staging a recipe for a pop of color such as in our Air Fryer Eggplant Stacks With Creamy Basil Dressing as shown below here. For the recipe for this great summer, appetizer click HERE.

As summer starts to end you are sure to have a supply of them in your garden leaving yourself looking for ways to use them up before they go back. One of my favorite ways to use them is in our Summer BLT Martini. It’s a simple and refreshing drink that makes you embrace the summer weather and the beauty of the tomatoes in your garden. Perfect for hosting a social distance garden party or summer BBQ. For the recipe to this must try summer martini click HERE.
