With the large variety of tomatoes in our garden we had an unlimited choice of varieties to make homemade salsa to jar for the upcoming football season. So I will admit it, I’m a New York Jets fan. Always have been, and there’s nothing that will ever change that. For me Sundays are all about home with Sunday brunch, Oprah Super Soul Sunday and football!! There’s a good chance during football season you will find me home on Sunday like a legal holiday spending the day in a good pair of yoga pants and a sports jersey.
If I am to reflect on watching the Jets for a moment and my grudge of them being called a New York team but play in New Jersey. Messed up right? Tell this Jersey girl about it. So when the games are on there’s always a chance living in Pennsylvania (but literally on the border of New Jersey where I can throw a rock off my front lawn and hit New Jersey) that I might not actually get to watch the game based on other teams playing at the same time in the country.
So I start my Sundays with a positive note hoping that if they are playing that I will see them. But if not I have already whipped up a spread of football snacks for whichever game is on for Todd and I to watch.
And that is what really matters on Sundays is time around the breakfast table, our Sunday New York Times Newspaper in bed with Todd attempting the crossword puzzle section, the comfort of home and home cooking. Usually I we will sit in bed with our Bulletproof coffee excited by the arrival of our newspaper so we can rip out the sections we enjoy the most. Mine was the Travel Section, where I would keep my favorite ones, building a collection of places that Todd and I would love to one day travel to. Unfortunately my favorite section has now been replaced with the Home Section thanks to our little friend Covid. But it’s ok, I’ve learNed to now enjoy this new section after months of opening up the paper and still hoping that my Travel Section will magically appear again.
One of Todd’s favorite snacks is salsa which goes so well with football. Todd can literally make a meal out of a jar of salsa, sour cream and a bag of chips. I first witnessed this “meal” creation of his when I first moved into his apartment. Yes, it was the typical mans apartment with a mattress still on the floor. Don’t worry I fixed that lol ! To give him credit he had only been in the apartment for two days. But I can remember him coming home with a bag from the grocery store filled with his favorite snack. In 30 seconds he had everything open and was already making a good dent into that jar of salsa.
Maybe that’s why it put such a big smile on my face to see him get all excited about us making homemade salsa. There he was in the kitchen offering to help in any way he could. Need me to chop something he said? Need me to run to the store for anything he said? Need me to heat jars for canning? It was obvious he was excited for the salsa.
We used our beautiful Blue Beauty Tomatoes and Buena Mulata Peppers for this recipe. The colors of the Blue Beauty Tomatoes works so well for salsa with its depths of dark blues, purples and black. It has very similar features of color as the Buena Mulata Pepper does with its properties of changing from purple to red to orange as it ripens. The Buena Mulata Pepper adds the perfect amount of heat with a slight Smokey flavor. To learn more about our Buena Mulata Pepper plants click HERE
This recipe is the perfect recipe for canning to stock away for snowstorm Sundays while watching the game. Simply once salsa is done follow standard canning instructions.

This recipe has a nice kick to it without setting your mouth on fire. If you like your mouth on fire feel free to add extra Buena Mulata Peppers. I prefer to keep it with fewer peppers and add a display of hot sauces next to it so guests can add their own flavor and level of heat.
We have used this salsa over fresh tacos on Taco Tuesday, and loaded nachos, and would be great for an easy taco soup topping. It will store once open in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
